Joseph Ha: Banana farmer, Hawaiian, businessman, and local manufacturer. I found his story in the August 2008 edition of Inc. magazine, not where I’d expected to motivation for my inaugural blog post on what I think can become a transformational motif in countries all over the world: local manufacturing.

Joseph Ha’s brand of manufacturing — farming — isn’t what I’d imagined as local manufacturing’s emblematic example either. I’ve been on the look out for small-scale factories, from small ten person operations up to 500 person operations, selling to geographically local markets.

My expectation is that as fuel prices rise, so will the economic incentive for local manufacturing, to offset the cost of distribution.

Joseph Ha based the future of this banana farm on this gamble.
